QI GONG

Ancient movement practice for energy, balance, and wellness

Program Overview

Qi Gong (pronounced "chee gong") is an ancient Chinese practice that focuses on cultivating and harmonizing Qi—the vital energy within your body. Through gentle movements, intentional breathwork, and visualization techniques, Qi Gong promotes health, vitality, and inner balance in a practice accessible to people of all ages and fitness levels.

Our program introduces traditional Qi Gong forms and exercises designed to enhance energy flow, reduce stress, and support overall well-being. With roots dating back thousands of years, these practices have stood the test of time, offering a holistic approach to physical and mental health that complements modern wellness routines.

Our sessions are gentle yet purposeful, creating space for mindful movement and deep relaxation. You don't need previous experience, flexibility, or fitness—just a willingness to slow down, breathe, and explore movement that serves your body and mind. Each practice leaves you feeling more centered, energized, and connected.

Led by an experienced instructor trained in traditional Qi Gong practices, our classes create a peaceful, supportive environment where you can explore this transformative practice at your own pace and experience the benefits of ancient wisdom applied to modern life.

Instructors

Jim Garofolo, LAc, MS

James brings a rare intersection of Eastern wisdom and Western science to his practice—blending 11 years as a U.S. Air Force translator fluent in Mandarin and Cantonese, a decade of elite coaching in functional movement, and advanced training in Traditional East Asian Medicine.

After serving his country and honing discipline through language and leadership in the Air Force, James transitioned to coaching, where he spent 10 years guiding athletes and individuals through transformative strength and conditioning programs. Recognizing the limits of physical training alone, he pursued formal education in Exercise Science at Ithaca College, then deepened his expertise with a Master's degree in Acupuncture and East Asian Medicine from New York Chiropractic College—becoming a Licensed Acupuncturist specializing in pain management, holistic healing, and the integration of lifestyle medicine.

James' approach is rooted in meeting people where they are. Whether you're managing chronic pain, seeking balance in a demanding life, or exploring movement and mindfulness for the first time, he creates space for self-discovery, sustainable healing, and long-term well-being. His work is informed by over 15 years of coaching experience, certifications in Qi Gong and meditation instruction, and a deep respect for the body's innate capacity to heal when given the right tools.

As a meditation and Qi Gong instructor, James guides students in developing practices that cultivate internal awareness, resilience, and presence—helping you build a foundation for wellness that extends far beyond the treatment table or the studio.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Do I need experience with Qi Gong?

No experience necessary. Qi Gong is designed to be accessible to everyone, regardless of fitness level or prior movement practice. Our instructor will guide you through each movement with clear instruction.

  • What are the benefits of Qi Gong?

Regular practice can help reduce stress, improve balance and coordination, enhance flexibility, promote better sleep, increase body awareness, and cultivate a sense of calm and centeredness.

  • What if I have limited mobility or movement restrictions?

Qi Gong is highly adaptable. Most movements can be modified or done while seated. Let the instructor know about any concerns before class, and they'll help you find what works for your body.

  • How is Qi Gong different than Yoga?

While both are mindful movement practices, Qi Gong focuses more on cultivating and balancing energy (qi) through gentle, repetitive movements and breath work. It's generally slower and more meditative than most yoga styles, with less emphasis on stretching or holding poses.

  • Do I need to bring anything?

Just bring yourself, water, and comfortable clothing. A yoga mat is optional—many practitioners prefer to practice standing directly on the floor.

  • Can I drop in, or do I need to commit to a series?

You're welcome to drop in for individual classes. However, many people find that regular practice deepens the benefits of Qi Gong over time.

  • Is this class appropriate for seniors?

Absolutely. Qi Gong is particularly beneficial for older adults as it improves balance, flexibility, and body awareness—all while being gentle on joints and muscles.
